Fall is fast approaching and the fish are starting their movements into fall patterns. Water temps have fallen into the low 70's and river levels are fairly low, with good clarity. Weeds are starting to die off and float on the surface, making bait presentation fairly difficult at times. Recent trips continue to produce some very good smallmouth bass catches. We are still having good success fishing the Punisher Hogsticker Shaky heads tipped with Case Mad Toms and Zoom flukes. These are fished in main channel rocky areas in current with deep water adjacent. Also picking up some bonus walleyes, Northern Pike and white bass. Panfish action is heating up with good catches of big bluegills, crappie and perch being taken. Nothing fancy on presentation. Just use a bobber, split shot and a hook. A piece of crawler or wax worms are all you need for the gills.Â
The trees are starting to turn and the peak period for fall colors is approaching fast. There is still some of the best fishing of the year ahead of us, so if you want to take advantage of some beautiful scenery and excellent fishing in the LaCrosse, WI area, give me a shout. I have some open dates in the next weeks.
