Spring is here in Southwest Wisconsin and it’s time for some bass fishing! The water temperatures here on the Mississippi River have recently risen into the mid 50’s. Water levels have fallen to decent levels in recent weeks after the late winter rise. Recent trips have produced some good stringers of smallmouth and largemouth. Good results using spinner baits, rattletraps, jigs and tubes. Bonus catches of big Northern pike also. ¼ to 3/8 chart./white, single or double Colorado spinner baits produced the best, with a slow to medium retrieve. Smallmouths are starting to feed heavily to prepare for spawning, which should take place in the next few weeks. A recent tournament out of this area took 34 pounds to win, and over 28 to get a check. (8 fish limit, team event) That’s over a 4 pound average…….good anywhere in the country! My area of the river covers Pools 8, 9 and 10, from LaCrosse to Prairie du Chien, WI.

I live on the lower Wisconsin River on the last stretch of the river before it enters the Mississippi. We have had some good success in recent weeks fishing backwater areas of the river. Good catches of largemouth have been caught including a nice fish in the 5 pound range.

If you have any questions about fishing or vacationing in this area, feel free to contact me. Good fishing!
