Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Water levels have dropped to near summer levels in recent weeks and fishing has been great!  The smallies have moved from spawing areas and have settled into their summer areas.  Rock banks, wingdams and running sloughs have been producing lots of good fish.  Largemouths are nearly done spawning and are starting to bite good again.  Still taking over a 3 pound average to cash a check in local tournaments.

Walleye fishing has improved.  We had a fish in the 8 pound class on a guide trip last Saturday, as well as some nice keeper sized fish.  Jigs with live bait presentations and crankbaits have been productive.

Panfish action is good.  Bluegills are on the beds and anglers are having a ball catching them on fly rods.  Mud and channel cat fishing is also very good right now.  Some real monsters are being taken!

Summer is a very good time to enjoy the beauiful Mississippi and Wisconsin River here in SW Wisconsin.  I have open dates and would love to take you fishing!

Good fishing,

Bass fishing continues to improve on the Mississippi River Pools 8-10 near LaCrosse, WI.  Water temps are still hovering in the 60 degree range.  Smallmouths appear to be finished spawning, while the largemouths are just beginning.  Recent rains and windy days have the water pretty dirty right now.  Recent outings have produced some nice stringers of fish in the 3 to 4 pound range.  The BFL tournament last Saturday out of LaCrosse took 18+ pounds to win.  Weights were down somewhat due to the extremely windy conditions.

Smallmouths on the Wisconsin River appear to be finished spawning.  River levels are still good, but clarity is not the best due to the recent heavy rains.  We've had some good catches of walleyes and sauger lately.  Most of the fish are being taken on crankbaits on current breaks and rocky shorelines.  Bank pole fishing for giant catfish is starting.  A 54 pounder was taken on the river out of Muscoda last week.  Hard to believe there are monsters that big roaming around!

I have some open dates in the next weeks, so if I can be of help, give me a call.

Good fishing,

Capt. John Bomkamp

Report for the weekend of May 1st . Fished the mid pool area on Friday afternoon. Water temps were in the 60 degree range again that day. Fished my smallmouth area I found last week and they were still there. Boated and released 5 nice fish, between 16 and 18 inches. Best bait was the rattletrap and a speed trap. Both chartreuse with blue back.

Saturday and Sunday fished the south end of the pool. Water temps dropped 5 degrees overnight. Saturday we had 17 largemouths, 1 smallmouth and 10 Northern. Best 5 bass weighed in the 15 pound range. These fish were caught on a variety of baits and patterns, ranging from main channel rocks to shallow weed beds. A black and blue swim jig produced the best. No huge northerns, but some pretty nice ones! Even ran into a couple of nice walleyes!

Today the bite was also pretty good, boating and releasing some nice largemouths. Took my grandson out for a few hours, and we caught a mixed bag, including perch, white bass, sheephead, northern , bass and red horse. A fun weekend! Bass fishing is getting better everyday.

Spawn time is just around the corner! For more information on fishing the upper Mississippi River in Southwest Wisconsin, give me shout!

Spring is here in Southwest Wisconsin and it’s time for some bass fishing! The water temperatures here on the Mississippi River have recently risen into the mid 50’s. Water levels have fallen to decent levels in recent weeks after the late winter rise. Recent trips have produced some good stringers of smallmouth and largemouth. Good results using spinner baits, rattletraps, jigs and tubes. Bonus catches of big Northern pike also. ¼ to 3/8 chart./white, single or double Colorado spinner baits produced the best, with a slow to medium retrieve. Smallmouths are starting to feed heavily to prepare for spawning, which should take place in the next few weeks. A recent tournament out of this area took 34 pounds to win, and over 28 to get a check. (8 fish limit, team event) That’s over a 4 pound average…….good anywhere in the country! My area of the river covers Pools 8, 9 and 10, from LaCrosse to Prairie du Chien, WI.

I live on the lower Wisconsin River on the last stretch of the river before it enters the Mississippi. We have had some good success in recent weeks fishing backwater areas of the river. Good catches of largemouth have been caught including a nice fish in the 5 pound range.

If you have any questions about fishing or vacationing in this area, feel free to contact me. Good fishing!
