Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fall is on it's way and the fishing is excellent right now in our part of the country.  River conditions are about as good as they have been all year.  Levels are stable and clarity is very good.  The Mississippi River Pool 9 is pumping out some big smallies on a daily basis.  We are seeing excellent results using Punisher's Hogsticker Shaky Head jigs tipped with Case MadToms fished on rock bars, wing dams and sandbars.  Frog fishing for largemouth is good right now also.  Recent tournaments are taking over a 3 pound average to win.  Walleye and sauger fishing is also improving, with wingdam fishing being the best, fishing leaches or crawlers on 3 way rigs.  Trolling crankbaits is also producing some nice catches.  Crappie and bluegill fishing is starting to pick up also.

We have had a cool summer, and it looks like fall will be here soon.  This is the best time to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the USA.  Come and experience the beautiful Upper Mississippi River this fall and cash in on some great fishing and hunting.

Last week the smallmouth bite has really improved. All three trips we had have produced some very nice fish up to 19 inches. Best baits were a swimming jig, Punisher “Flame” spinner bait and a Punisher small jaw shaky jig with a Paca chunk. Clear water weed beds were areas where the moving baits produced, and main channel rocks provided the jig action. These areas are producing both smallies and largemouths. The fish were fairly shallow, but near deep water. Also picked up a bonus walleye or two. Water levels have been fairly stable with good visibility. Trollers have been catching some good walleyes, sauger and northern pike. The weather has been absolutely fantastic with temps in the mid to upper 70’s. Now’s the time to plan for your fall fishing trip in beautiful SW Wisconsin near LaCrosse, WI.   Give me a call or shoot me an email for information.

Water levels have dropped to summer pool on Pools 8,9 and 10 of the upper Mississippi River near LaCrosse, WI.  Water clarity is excellent, with visibility down to around 3 feet or so.  Smallmouth fishing is on fire right now.  We have been fishing the main channel on rock bars and wing dams with excellent results, both in numbers and size.  Senko style baits have produced some excellent fish in 2 to 5 pound range, and lots of them!  Casting up on the submerged rocks and seeing the fish blast over and bust your bait - it doesn't get much more exciting!!

Largemouth fishing is also very good right now.  Post spawn have them moving into the weedbeds where you can catch them on a variety of baits including frogs, swimjigs and buzzbaits.  Water temps are in the upper 70's.  Air temps are also in the upper 70's to mid 80's.  Perfert weather to enjoy the day on the ole Miss.

Panfish, walleye and catfish are also being caught in good numbers.

I have some open dates available if you are interested in spending a few days up here in "God's Country"!

Water levels are falling to normal summer levels and the fishing is getting better everyday.  We have had some very cool, cloudy weather, which has kept the water temps from rising.  Forecasts of upper 80's should change that.

The Wisconsin River has been producing some nice smallmouth bass.  Crankbaits, jigs, and texas rigged soft plastics have produced on the rocky areas and sandbar breaks.  Topwater action has been good in the early morning and late evening.  Channel catfish are biting good.  Crawlers and cheesebait are working good right now.  Walleye and sauger action is steady. Bank pole fisherman have been taking some huge monster mudcats.  Several have been caught in the 40s, with a 62 pounder caught recently!

The Mississippi River around LaCrosse, WI has been kicking out some big stringers of largemouth and smallmouth bass.  This area produces some of the best bass fishing in the nation, in my opinion.  Walleye action has been good.  Bluegills are spawning, and good catches of big gills in the 10"-12" range are being caught.

To experience some of the best fishing anywhere, give me a call or shoot me an email.  I have open dates available for you!
