Since my last report the water temps have fallen into the low to mid 50's from the 70 degree range. We've had some cool nites and cloudy, windy days lately. The fish are getting into their fall paterns now, with large schools of hungry largemouths and smallmouths getting out in the main channel near wintering areas. Right now topwater baits and rattletraps are producing some nice fish, but it won't be long and we'll have to go to a slower presentation. Punisher's Hogsticker Shakey Heads tipped with a zoom fluke or a grub are excellent baits for this. Later when the water temps get into the 40s, we have excellent success with Punisher jigs.Â
Big bluegills and crappies are also biting well right now. Small jigs tipped with a piece of crawler or minnows are your best bet. The big flathead cats are still being taken on live bluegills or cut bait. These beasts weigh up into the 40 pound range. A friend of mine had a huge fish on for over an hour the other day before it finally go off at the boat. He said it was nearly 6 feet long! Wow!! He was walleye fishing with light line, so was about impossible to land it on light tackle.Â
The lower water temps are getting the walleye and sauger on the move also. From now on until around Thanksgiving should be very good.Â
I have some open days left this fall for some excellent fishing. The fall colors are beautiful right now. Hunting season started, so what better time to combine a fishing and hunting trip! Also, my 2007 Triton 20X is for sale. It's fully equipped including a Mercury 225 ProXS with warranty to 2012. I can send pictures if you are interested. Just email me.
Thanks, and good fishing!

Fishing continues to be excellent on the Upper Mississippi River near LaCrosse, WI. Fall is on us, and the bite continues to improve everyday.Â
CATFISH: Big flatheads are being taken in deep water tailwater areas on live bluegills and cutbait. Depth ranges from 20 to 70 feet. Lots of nice fish up to 25 pounds are being caught. What a fight! Lots of nice channel cats are also being taken.
BASS: Both smallmouth and largemouths are starting to move toward wintering areas and are feeding up heavily. Recent trips are producing excellent catches. Topwater baits are the ticket right now for some exiting action.Â
PANFISH: Big bluegills and crappies are starting to bite now. Bluegills are being taken on live crawlers or red worms fished both on the bottom and below a bobber. Crappie fishing is also starting to heat up with some big slabs being taken on minnows and jigs.
WALLEYE: Fishing has been spotty lately. One day it seems to be pretty good, then the next day it is slow again. The water temps are still in the low to mid 70's, and current flow is very low. When temps start to drop and flow picks up, this should improve the fishing.
I have some open dates in the coming weeks for some excellent fall fishing. Come spend a few days with us and enjoy the beautiful scenery in our area right now!

Fall is fast approaching and the fish are starting their movements into fall patterns. Water temps have fallen into the low 70's and river levels are fairly low, with good clarity. Weeds are starting to die off and float on the surface, making bait presentation fairly difficult at times. Recent trips continue to produce some very good smallmouth bass catches. We are still having good success fishing the Punisher Hogsticker Shaky heads tipped with Case Mad Toms and Zoom flukes. These are fished in main channel rocky areas in current with deep water adjacent. Also picking up some bonus walleyes, Northern Pike and white bass. Panfish action is heating up with good catches of big bluegills, crappie and perch being taken. Nothing fancy on presentation. Just use a bobber, split shot and a hook. A piece of crawler or wax worms are all you need for the gills.Â
The trees are starting to turn and the peak period for fall colors is approaching fast. There is still some of the best fishing of the year ahead of us, so if you want to take advantage of some beautiful scenery and excellent fishing in the LaCrosse, WI area, give me a shout. I have some open dates in the next weeks.

Late report from Thursday to Sunday. Fished Thursday evening with Todd and Dan for a late afternoon/evening bass and northern trip. The weather was weird that day with beautiful sunny skies one minute and thunder storms and rain the next. The guys had never fished heavy weeds and slop before. They got three nice largemouths on frogs. Nothing beats a good blow-up! We fished some main channel stuff, but it was pretty slow. Did manage a couple of walleyes and a some smallies. Ended up with some nice fish and a good day on water. Friday and Saturday I prefished for the Grant County Bass Club 4 Man tournament which was held out of Prairie du Chien on Sunday. The weather forecast called for scattered showers for the day. Just after daylight it started raining and never stopped all morning! The bite was tough that day. Saturday we fished the south end of Pool 9. Had a blast that day boating a mixed bag of smallmouth, largemouth, walleye, northern, white bass, channel cat and mud cat. Enough for a nice fish fry! Most of the fish came on weedlines fishing a jig, texas rigged soft plastics, and rattletraps. Found a couple of good schools a bass for the tourney. Sunday morning we awoke to heavy fog. The tournament was supposed to take off at 6:00, but we didn’t get off until 8:00, and then it was still foggy. We idled for probably an hour before it broke enough to make our run up to Pool 9. We finally started fishing around 10:00. Our team consisted of myself, my Grandson Will, his Dad Heath, and Heath’s Dad, Denny. We ended up with our limit of 12 fish that weighed in at just over 32 pounds, good enough for first place in the 80 plus boat field. Will , (7 years old) caught the first fish of the day that was 3 ½ pounds! He caught it on a scum frog in heavy pads and slop. I know a lot of grown men that can’t get them out of that stuff! Pretty happy little boy! We had mixed bag of largemouths and smallmouths. 2 of the smallmouths were 3 pounders. These were caught on swim jigs. The river seems to be changing everyday now. Weeds are starting to die off, water temps are slowly falling, and the days are getting shorter. Fall is about here, which means the best fishing of the year in my opinion!
