Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/28/10 With just a few days on the lake in the early part of the week, as I took some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday, my report might be a little dated. The results early in the week however were really good in fact it was probably the most typical fall pattern week I have experienced this year. The bass were bunched up, around the bait and hitting reaction baits. All you had to do was find some activity and you were catching fish; in fact there was bait moving in the back ends of every creek we fished in so finding them was pretty easy. As typical in the fall numbers were very good putting 30 plus fish in the boat but size was a little harder to come by. The biggest fish was only in the 3 pound range so we really didn’t find anything big at all. I fished mainly up river this week, as I always find the upper river more active as we move into the winter fishing months. Most of our fish came on rattle baits or Punisher spinner baits working around the activity. A few good days for a short week on Guntersville; but some great results and some great fun you just had to be on the water to experience it! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/20/10 We are slowly moving to a winter time bite on Guntersville, and because of that we have two distinct patterns that the fish are being caught on. If we have some over cast skies and south winds we have found fish shallow in the backs of coves and creeks in about 2 to 4 feet of water. When the sun has been out and the wind from the North and East then the bass have showed signs of winter type movement to the river ledges hitting slower type baits. This has been the issue in catching fish this past week, because fishing the wrong pattern really made for some tough days this past week on Guntersville. If you were on the ledges at the wrong time it was difficult to get a bite, I also believe that the wider open mid to lower part of the lake was harder this week to find a producing pattern; as the bass movement is always more distinct in the wider vs. narrower part of the lake. The narrower part of the river gives the bass less options and allows you to make pattern changes and find fish easier and this week was a typical example of it. We slowed down our presentation working SWL Recoil Rigs along the river ledges and using it as a drop shot in the 8 to 14 ft. of water. In the back waters when it produced on top buzz frogs caught fish most of the time. A fair week some OK results but fairly typical for the mid to late November time frame. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/14/10 This past week on the water showed some great signs of some of the best fall fishing of the year. We had a couple of great days, but most were pretty productive with good numbers and fairly good size. Don’t get me wrong; it still took some searching and work to develop a pattern but once you did it was a lot of fun. The key for me was the water temperature, the water temperature is dropping and understanding what to do in mid to upper 50 degree water was the key! It’s also very noticeable that the grass is thinning and dying back, and this allows you to do a lot of different things when fishing around the grass. We did everything from, throwing a frog to, flipping the holes in the grass. We also got away from the grass and worked patterns where the grass was gone and caught fish and good fish away from the grassy areas on the lake. We are close to winter patterns and we should be seeing the bigger fish starting to show back up in our daily catches. Winter can be a great time for that big Guntersville hog to offer up a lot of fun. Come fish with me, it’s a great time of year! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/7/10 The past week was full of all kinds of challenges, extreme cold for this early in the year, winds around 30 mph and bass that have been stingy at best being pushed by the cold wintery type weather. The good news was if you could hide from the wind the bass actually came out to play most of the week. The other exciting thing was the bass have seemed to finally want some faster moving bait; as we caught fish on several search baits. My customers this week if they were dressed properly really had some good fun especially with rattle baits and Secret Weapon buzz baits. The grass has really showed some signs of dying and being ripped away from the bottom allowing you to fish more search type baits and work closer to the grass beds. I must say that as is fairly typical this time of year the bites came in streaks and the down time with cold north winds made the day long and cold. The good news is this cold spell will definitely help the fishing at least for a few more weeks; numbers should be a lot easier to come-bye until they finally head deep for the winter. Even then I’ve seen years where we kept warming up after a short cold spell and the bass moved with the warming days and the bright sun and made for some great winter fishing. There is definitely some good times left in the season before winter, and if you like the lake to yourself, this can be the best time of year. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 8/28/10 I only spent a couple of days on the water this past week but it appears to me that the cooler nights is moving the inactive fish up some, and the frog and top water bite is getting better. The few days I did spend on the water we found the bass in several different stages of the fall movement, there was a nucleus of fish up under the grass and we worked them with frogs and soft plastics. Then as the day changed we moved off the grass lines and did some cranking finding fish striking reaction movements with crank baits. The amazing thing about fall fishing is reaction bites are apt to produce a big fish more than any time of the year, but you have to work your baits with movement that the big bass will strike. We worked our baits in several types of presentation looking for the reaction bite and had several good fish this past week. There is a tremendous amount of bait out on the lake and you have to give the bigger fish a reason to strike your bait. Most my customers saw improved catches, opportunities and size this past week making it probably the best week for me since the heat set in about 6 weeks ago. We have a strong window of opportunity over the next 8 weeks to have some really good days on the water! Come fish with me I have days available to fish with you!
