Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 2/13/11 The late week warm up pushed the fish up shallow and the pre-spawn rush was on by the end of the week. It was just amazing how a few degrees of water temperature gave the bass some energy and got them feeding in shallow water. They weren’t everywhere but they bunched up and fed in groups and when you caught one you caught several. Baits were pretty simple, if it moved they ate it, from spinner baits to rattle baits and swim baits they feed on anything that made noise and moved erratically. You had to keep moving from secondary point to point, keep reeling and fishing but eventually they showed up and we had some good catches. The good times are here once again, it will get better and better as we get into spring. There will surely be some set-backs as the winter is far from over but for the most part, those who fish hard will be rewarded with great catches. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/30/11 A pleasant change for the good in weather; made for some better times on the water. We saw a few degree increases in water temperature over the week that pushed the bass up on top of the grass for a short period of time during each day. In fact the water temperature warmed in three days from 36 degrees to 43 degrees, and the result was some good times on the water. I believe we are starting to see the early pre-spawn movement; it will only last a few hours a day until we get a few more degree increase in water temperature each day. The result will be a few hours a day of good activity as we had this past week. We had some very successful trips this past week with one day having a stringer of about 18 lbs. and several fish being caught during the trip. It’s definitely rattle bait and spinner bait time, some erratic movement and noise was the key to getting strikes and should continue for six or more weeks as we move through the pre-spawn period. When you find the grass you have found the fish at least that appeared to be the key this past week. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/23/11 Winter is still upon us, and fishing is still hit and miss from the cold, snow and nasty days so far this January. The good news is the winter should be winding down as we are approaching February and a normal year means great pre-spawn fishing as we move into February. This past week I spent just a few days on the water, success was spotty, but the size of the fish when did find them was pretty good. The sunny days definitely were better than the overcast ones, which is pretty typical for the winter months. This is the time of year I enjoy slow rolling a Punisher Spinner Bait off the drops near the river, we did that some this past week but the wind made it real hard to fish off the channel. Most our fish we did catch were in the creeks in the 10 to 4 foot drops. Most came on a jerk bait and rattle bait. The good times are close, keep at it, the best is near! I am booking for the spring and have several opening still available to fish with you! It’s time to plan those outings now as spring fishing will be here before you know it! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/8/11 A number of things this past week contributed to some tough days on the water, early in the week we had some extremely high water for Lake Guntersville. Somewhere in the 596 ft elevation; which put the tops of boat docks nearly under water? Then after the water level came back down to more normal elevation the wind picked up and caused some tough fishing conditions when trying to hold your position over structure. All said we certainly struggled, coming up with any consistent pattern this past week. We fished several baits and only found a few things successful, we worked Punisher Spinner baits over the top of the grass in 8 foot of water, and we fished Tight-Line jigs along long deep points and twitched jerk baits along grass edges and over grass bottoms. Nothing really produced but the few fish we did catch were caught on jerk baits, the key however was a long pause and a lot of patients. The one bait we did not fish that I believe should have worked was a Carolina rig; we just never could hold ourselves in the depth it would have taken for the bait to produce. It will be tough for another few weeks and hopefully as spring moves in around the middle of February we should be all over some great and consistent fishing by then. Until them we will keep plugging away at the winter bite looking for that one monster that makes the elements worth it! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 12/26/10 With the holidays and the busy days around Christmas I only spent one day on the water this past week, but I must say it was the kind of day that takes your breath away. The big fish were out just looking to become part of my picture album. I fished up river working over grass in a warmer morning, it was very interesting as the morning water temperature was in the mid to high 40’s and by the time we came off the water the cold north wind dropped the water temperature a good 5degrees. Most our fish were caught in less than 6 feet of water which was a little surprising after such a cold spell in the early part of the week. The bigger fish were caught on Punisher Spinner Bait 3/8 oz silver shad colored spinner bait with dual willow leaf silver blades. We had a good day caught several good fish that were just big footballs and looked like they were ready to pop any minute. I fished with my partner Jake Davis we had a great day and as the winter moves on and the days get longer they will only get better. I believe the winter will be as good as we have seen in a couple of years as we seem to be back to some normal winter weather patterns, with early December cold and warming trends every 4 or 5 days. Come fish with me I have days available to fish with you! Fish Lake Guntersville Guide Service www.fishlakeguntersvilleguideservice.com Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
