Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/9/11 Fishing this past week had some ups and downs; the wind played a big factor a couple of days where you had all you could do to hold yourself on a spot. Most of the week however seemed to be about the soft plastic bite, with fish hitting worms, lizards and creature baits in many different presentations. We are also in the middle of another wave of fish moving in to spawn; this produced some slow parts of the day and some activity when you did not expect it! All said, it was another good week on Guntersville, the grass is starting to grow on the ledges and flats and I expect this will improve the fishing as the bass will start spreading the lake. The biggest thing to look forward to will be the top water activity, I really expect the top water bite to gain some ground this week making a day on the water a little more fun! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 3/26/11 We are definitely fishing the best time of the year, March has been great this past week was as good as it gets and we are having fun. Sure there is some down time the bass are not biting all day long and some days are better than others but it has been great. This past week we had days of catching 30 to 50 bass in an 8 hour day; Friday with the north wind and the high pressure moving in was a little slower but that was the exception. The baits are changing a little we are catching fish on several baits from swim baits to rattle baits and others. The big bites are still coming on a Tight-Line jig and if you downsized to a small worm you would pick up in numbers. My customers are happy, fishing is good, the good times are here and there is more to come before the heat of the summer sets in. The bass are starting to show up in the post spawn locations and that means the spinner bait bite is right around the corner! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 3/19/11 This time of year even the most inexperienced of fisherman can easily find and catch bass! This past week was an example of that as fishing was easy! That’s right, when the bass move up for the spawn and move to the shallows as they are now doing fishing becomes easy. We had days this past week that the number of fish caught during an 8 hour day was enormous, coupled with that the big females are all blown up and getting ready to spawn so the size was there also. We experienced a great week on the water; we found it easy and had a ton of fun! It’s great to see young kids catch a bass and it is the time of year they can easily do so. If you can cast and reel you can catch a bass; and we did a lot of that with rattle baits this past week? With spring breaks occurring all over the country it’s time to take your young kids and get them on the water to enjoy a day of catching; yes catching not just fishing. Rattle baits, jigs, spinner baits and Texas rigged lizards caught fish for us this past week and I expect you will be able to do more of the same for a few more weeks. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 3/6/11 This was definitely the best week of the year so far; we consistently caught fish for the last 7 days straight. The days all started fairly similar as we struggled in the morning until about 11am and then they turned on for the rest of the day. It’s like a light got turned on everyday and the fish started to move and bite for the rest of the day. This week we had several fish caught over 7 pounds with one monster over 10 lbs. and that was caught by a lady out the Chicago area, practicing for an up-coming tournament. The good news is the fish are just moving up for the pre-spawn fishing movement and the best of the pre spawn is yet to come. We caught fish on several baits this week the best catcher was Tight-Line football head jigs in black and blue color. We did catch them on rattle baits, crank baits and swim baits. The fish are staged in the 8 ft. drops and the jig bite was the perfect choice. The spring bite is getting better and the best is yet to come. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 2/27/11 As the water warms the fishing has gotten better; without a doubt we have seen much improvement from the January time frame. The problem is Guntersville is just not giving up the numbers of fish it was just a few years ago. We are on the down turn of the lake, there is going to be more bad days than good ones, and the average fisherman is going to struggle more and more. This folks is a fact and we better get used to it, we will see less tax money from the local fishing industry as I have been predicting for a couple of years. As word gets out and more fisherman struggle the number of fisherman coming here will reduce drastically. This week a solid hard 8 hour day of fishing is giving up smaller numbers of fish than any time in the last several years; a good day can be 15 to 20 fish and you work hard and long for those. We had a couple of good days this past week and a few days of even further struggles with catches of 7 to 11 fish. The fish we are catching are coming on rattle baits and Punisher Spinner Baits, with a few on worms and swim baits. There are tournaments all over the lake week in and week out and the bass are already beat up, to catch big fish and good numbers you have to fish hard and have above average skills with the ability to find a different way to get a bite! I am working hard with my customers to improve their fishing skills and teach them some new ways and ideas to catch fish. Come fish with me let me help improve your fishing skills.
