Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 7/23/11 I spent the first few days of the week on the water, just trying to keep up with the patterns the fish were following. It is certainly extremely hot and uncomfortable past the first few hours of the morning. The schooling bite seems a little stronger in the evening but the late afternoon heat is tough. The bite that was most productive for me was top water over the grass, and if you’re on top of the schooling fish it is really active. You are fishing hard for the time on the water for the few bites you get. It still however beats a day at work for most. The weather should start to show some signs of change and as we start to see some cooling in the evening and winds we should really get a big pick up in the activity. The bottom bite has been all worm or jig around the grass edges and point drops off the ledges. I have been using a Tight-Line football jig in watermelon type coloring ¾ oz or maybe ½ oz. in size. I have not been able to get a consistent flipping bite as I expected yet but that should come any day! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 7/10/11 This past week on Guntersville started out with a lot of activity, we caught plenty of fish and found them in many types of patterns. It ended however with a real tough bite, having to work extremely slow and fish the same spot over and over until you finally got a bite. The good news was the numbers didn’t suffer but you had to make a lot of casts to the same spot to get a bite. I believe the bass are still in transition from the deep ledges moving to the grass and it will take some strong patience to have great days until we see some cooling start as we move to fall. The two patterns that should start to see more and more activity is the flipping bite and the frog bite; both these patterns should produce fish and get better as the summer goes on. If you like summer time fishing, I have 6 hour trips that have us off the water before noon and gives you an opportunity at top water and flipping without bearing the worst of the summer heat. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 7/1/11 The heat has definitely made fishing tougher this past week; we have to work hard to get enough bites to have a good day. The problem is the down time in between bites and catches, you can fish for a couple of hours and not even begin to get bit, then you catch 3 or 4 and wait again for the next flurry. That slow action coupled with the extreme heat has taken its toll on most the fishermen on the water. The good news is when you get into the fish they are pretty good quality and put on a good fight making the down times go away. My sense is as everything has seemed to happen early this year; so my belief is the bass will shortly move off the ledges and into the grass making the flipping bite and frog bite occur early also. This can be a lot of fun as customers love to fish the frog. Fishing is good, not great but time on the water is the only way to stay with the fish as they move and change over the course of this summer. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/26/11 If you would have dissected the weather this past week and related it to fishing you would have thought that the week would have been excellent fishing. Well sometimes weather patterns fool you and this past week I struggled to find active fish with any size. It was rainy, cooler than the past but the fish stayed suspended and just didn’t move as I expected. One of the biggest factors was the wind, just about every morning when you expected it to be calm and counted on a top water bite it didn’t happen. When we did find a top water bite it occurred mid morning when you really didn’t expect it, if you found them mid morning we loaded the boat, if not you struggled. We spent most the week between BB Comer Bridge and Seibold Creek fishing many different patterns. We spent time on the ledges, looking for active fish, we worked grass lines from 6 to 30 feet of water and we fished humps from one end of the lake to the other. There are many places where the grass is about top out and this should supply plenty of cover for the bass as they make their move from the ledges to the creeks as we move through summer. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/18/11 We were given some gifts this past week with over cast skies, north breeze, rain and slightly cooler temperatures, this definitely helped the fishing some. The week was really very good although we probably missed as many fish as we caught. The good news for me was the frog bite is starting to raise its head and the fun of top water fishing with a frog has just begun. Although the frog bite fish were not real big they were a bunch of fun, and you know that it won’t be long before the bigger fish move off the ledges and into the grass. We did spend one day just working ledges and found a bunch of fish and caught some bigger fish but also caught all different species, catfish, stripers, white bass, spots, drum and large mouth. It’s just amazing how many fish you can catch on a ledge, it’s real easy to put 50 fish in the boat in a couple of hours if you get on the rite ledge and don’t care if it’s a drum or a bass. Fishing is good, we are having fun and catching fish, sure there is some down time but the day is most definitely worth it. Come fish with me I have days open this up-coming week to fish with you.
