Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 9/11/11 Certainly the significance of 9/11 goes way beyond any fishing report, but for those you moving on this past week has finally produced the beginning of fall fishing and we are catching fish and Guntersville is starting to see the movement to the fall. The fish are biting, we had some days upward of 30 plus fish and the fall fishing is just starting; there is certainly more to come! We started the week out with a couple of 20 plus days, catching fish on many different types of baits and we ended the week with catches over 30 and just had a blast. The top water bite on El Grande toads (buzz frogs) was great they hit them all day long in the sun as well as the cloudy overcast. The fall brings many types of patterns and we caught fish on several baits in a variety of water depths. Just a great week, its cooler the water temperature has dropped into the 70’s and all is well, and fishing is picking up. Come fish with me I have guides and days available. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 9/4/11 The lake showed signs of improvement this past week, and with the heavy rain coming in I expect we will start to see the top water improve tremendously. This past week bites were a little better, scattered but steady and size and numbers went up just about every day. It’s been a long hot summer but the end is near and signs are pointing towards improvement already. The days presented different patterns as one day we had a top water bite most of the day and the next day the worm bite seemed to be the answer. The fish weren’t grouped but if you worked at it the bite was good enough to have some fun. Certainly overcast skies helped as we had one morning where the clouds lingered around and fishing was good while they did! There is plenty of action rite around the corner so it’s time to get back on the water and give it shot, I believe you see some better results. Come fish with me I have days and guides available to fish with you! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 8/27/11 With still some personal things going on I did not get a chance to get on the water so my report is second hand from my other guides. It appears that the 60 degree night time temperature had a positive effect on the fishing. All indication are that the bite picked up especially early in the morning as the cooling night time temperatures helped the top water bite. Most of my guides reported better early morning catches this past week. We also noticed some movement off the grass during the high sunny part of the day as the big worm and Tight-Line jig bite was also better than it’s been. It appears that you had to move to the 10 ft ditches away from the grass during the high sun, but if you did the results were pretty good. If we can continue to see some cooling at night the frog bite could be an all day affair as we get into September, and that would be exactly what we are looking for! Fishing seems to be improving and the best part of the fall bite is almost here. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 8/20/11 The best way to describe this past week is to say “we caught a fish here and a fish there,” nothing was really a pattern and no bait was declared the winner. If you got a bite and missed it, it was one of very few opportunities over the day. Some bites were in 12 to 15 ft. of water some were in 4 ft. of water; just a really tough week on Guntersville and for the life of me I can’t explain it. Very little activity all week long and I could not find a solution to change the slow pattern. The early part of the week we had one evening where we did find some schooling fish and we took some 8 ft type diving crank baits and cranked them off and through the schooling fish and found a couple good bites at the bottom where the crank bait bounced and moved off the bottom structure. Other than that our here and there pattern was some top water baits, like an El Grande Buzz Frog or a popping bait, and a traditional worm, or maybe even a jig off the deeper edges. I just have to believe that the heat and hot water temperature has the fish suspending and not feeding much and timing of being on the water at the right time is everything. The bass have to feed maybe it’s at night but at some point during a 24 hour period there feeding and you have to be there to enjoy it! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 8/7/11 The clouds and rain finally affected the fish in a positive way this past week. The first few days of the week fishing was tough and bites were scarce. The weather changed and the rain and clouds and cooler weather started to gather the fish and move them to the grass. It was not an immediate change but by the time the third overcast day in a row the fish were extremely active. I believe this might be the early beginning of the bass moving up into the grass to feed and the fall bite is close. We struggled early in the week but by Saturday we caught plenty of fish there was some good size and we were getting bites on several different presentations. Swim baits were producing bites and most the better fish were hitting them pretty well as the end of the week rolled on. Hopefully we have made a transition to some better times and we can finally get back to some pretty good fishing.
