Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 7/11/09 The first week of July has been the best I can remember in years, in fact I went and researched my now 17 years of history and there is know doubt this past week is the best my history shows for size and numbers. The down side of this past week is that there is just not the top water activity that my past history shows, for similar time frame in other years. We have done just OK on top with SWL buzz baits working some and buzz frogs, Pop’rs and spooks holding a close second for activity on top. The bait that has caught most of the fish for me has been soft plastic like Mister Twister big worms and Comida’s. We have on the windy days caught fish on Punisher’s Spinner Baits and swimming a Tight-Line jig over the grass. I saw a lot of smiles from some happy customers they caught a boat load of fish everyday and each person managed to catch or have a shot at a big fish on a daily bases. The good times are many and the summer has been very productive, there is a lot of great fishing left for the summer, I hope everyone can get on the water and experience it. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 7/4/09 The lake kept on keeping on this past week, the bass were schooled up in groups and most of the week we caught a lot of fish on just about every trip. We saw a little dip in water temperature from the 90+ ranges in to the mid 80’s; and I believe it helped the bite at least for the first few hours of the morning. The wind in the afternoons slowed the top water activity but if you like slow rolling a lightweight Punisher Spinner bait over the top of the grass it was also a successful pattern. The big winner most of the week for my customers was Mister Twister big worms, most of our good size and numbers were caught on big worms. The color seemed to be what ever matched the watercolor at that time of day; the high sun changed the color compared to the lower light sunny time. We also found some good bites on crank baits ranging from 8 to 15 feet in depth either over the top of the grass or down the edges and points. The bass have survived the heat so far and in most cases we found anywhere from 20 to 50+ bites or opportunities a day. In the heat we have had you just can’t ask for much more. Most my trips have not been for more than 6 hours at a time trying to keep most people off the water in the extreme heat of the day. There are still some great days ahead for the summer, come fish with me I have day’s available le to fish with you! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/27/09 The heat this week raised the water temperature to the low 90’s and I must say if you wanted to keep catching fish you had to find the deeper points and muscle beds to do so. The little bites were still out there in the 6 to 10 foot range but if you wanted a big bite you had to fish deep. The problem this week for me was customer patience, it was a typical hot summer time bite, some times they bite really well and others you had to just hang, be patient and keep your bait on the bottom to catch fish. As summer time fishing always does the patience of the fisherman was tested, that expectation that the bite will be continuous got to some of my customers. Even though we caught fish everyday the time between bites some times made the heat seem a little tough. I worked hard at finding consistent bites but past 9 am that became tough, we had to drag Carolina rigs, or fish slow moving Tight-Line jigs, we even fished some drop shots off the deep points. We fished mainly the mid part of the lake, early in the day we worked top-water baits we had mixed results working mainly SWL buzz baits on top and past that it was slow moving big Mister Twister worms, Tight-Line jigs and drop shots. We had some really good days early in the week with 25 to 35 fish a day and it slowed a little on or about Thursday. Its typical summertime fishing but it still beats working, come fish with me I have days available to fish with you! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/20/09 Some of the hottest days of 2009 occurred this past week; it definitely had some effect on the fishing. The bite past 9 am everyday was definitely tougher; it wasn’t that the fish didn’t bite as much as the heat made for some tough concentration issues. The fish were feeding but the bite was slow and you really had to concentrate on your rod tip and line to feel the bites. If you didn’t the fish would be gone or pull you into a position that you couldn’t set the hook and you lost the fish! The good news was that most of the week we had a strong top water bite early, until Saturday that is and it made for some fun and quick catches in the morning before you had to go to the big worm or jig bite to catch a fish. We averaged about 15 to 25 fish a day had a couple of good fish everyday and had some great times with some great customers. I did fish with the gentleman from Virginia fishing 50 trophy lakes in 50 days, they had and excellent day Friday morning landing their personal best in the largemouth species at 5.7 and caught a bunch of fish. There are some good times ahead, my trips for the next six weeks will be limited to 6 hour days unless we have some cooling or rain occurs. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/13/09 The top water bite keeps getting stronger and the fun has just begun. There is no better time on the lake for the inexperienced and accomplished fisherman than when the bass are hitting top water baits. This past week was the start of the top water season for me and my clients and we absolutely had great week fishing over the grass. We fished everything from Buzz frogs to popping baits and spooks to SWL buzz baits. I saw some customers hanging on for dear life when the flushing began. If you have never been successful on top water it’s the time to try it. The bass explode through the grass leave a big opening in the water and just eat your bait. They are fierce and tough and trying to haul one out of the cover is work. All week long my clients struggled trying to get those big fish out of the grass. They had big smiles, caught numbers and big fish and just had a blast. We fished all 3 sections of the lake this past week, it really didn’t matter what end of the lake you were at if there was grass you could get a top water bite. The Secret Weapon Lures buzzbait caught the biggest fish all week long they are just a terrific bait well balanced, heavy enough to make long casts and sharp enough to put the big ones in the boat. You can buy them on line at www.secretweaponlures.com use my FLGGS9 code and get a 30% discount off of list. The top water bite is on and I have days available to fish with you!
