Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/8/09 Some November rewards this past week; it’s the time of year that the big females are moving extremely shallow and patience paid off with top water. The old hollow body rat saved the day each day on the water. Numbers were tough unless you were chasing schooling fish but quality was there. Some big females up to almost 9 lbs. were put in the boat, along with some big smiles and chest pounding fun! If I had to describe the week in one word, I would say “monsters,” some of the biggest fish I have seen this fall and certainly some of the best fun. I also was blessed to spend one day small mouth fishing on Tim’s Ford with the Director of sales from Secret Weapon Lures and had some fun hanging some “Smallies.” Most of the week, I spent on the upper part of the lake, above Goose Pond looking for some of those key areas I like as the big bass move into the November preparation for the spring spawn. As November seems to always produce some big fish so far we seem to be in a similar November pattern. I have beliefs about fishing this time of year that makes November always a month to remember. It just takes a little patience and time and some methodically fishing to make a dream come true. “A November to Remember.” You see fishing can be dram day this time of year you just have to go do it! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/1/09 The last week of October proved to be just fair for my clients and me. Bites were at a premium and big fish were tough to find. The best day we had about 19 fish most were small and bites did not come easy. The other days we were fishing for only 10 or so bite a day, and it certainly made the days long on the water. I fished with some great folks out of several parts of the country, certainly met some great people and had some fun on the water. The key for finding small fish was working small rattle baits or Punisher 3/8 oz. spinner baits through the gobs of baitfish in the lake. You had to be off the grass areas for it to work, but if you went to the coves where the wind was pushing the bait you could find some small fish. There is still a rat bite on the water, it’s not all over but getting to the icky, nasty dying brown grass still is producing some rat bites. Winter is near we are heading toward the shortest day of the year and as I have always said the winter solstice change from short to longer days gets the fish back moving and fishing will pick up after that. I am booked for all available dates in 2009 but wide open for the 2010 year. Let’s go fishing together! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 10/24/09 I give up, no just kidding but sometimes I feel like it! The fishing for me seems to be getting worse. Unless there is schooling bass it’s hard to find a bite. I am struggling just about everyday on the water with a few exceptions. I just can’t remember a fall like this; it’s definitely the toughest fall I have seen in many years! With the exception of one day trying to find a way to put some good fish in the boat is really tough. The day we did do well the bass were on the edges of the grass lines working bait most of the day. We found them pitching small size Tight-Line jigs in Guntersville red and a red trailer. Other than that we had to look for schooling fish to get a bite. The schooling bass were also very sensitive to bait selection; the only way we could get them to bite was to work a jigging spoon, by popping it off the bottom. The exciting thing about working a jigging spoon is you never know what you might catch. We caught stripers, white bass, as well as a few catfish and small bass. At some point before the cold winter sets in we should see some strong activity and the fishing should pick. I still believe fishing even on the slow days beats a day at work any day. Come fish with me I have days available to fish with you! Fish Lake Guntersville Guide Service www.fishlakeguntersvilleguideservice.com Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 10/17/09 Another week of mixed results on the water, we started to see some signs of the typical fall fishing, during the mid part of the week, I had high hopes; but then! Friday this extreme cold and wind moved in and to say the least it was very tough. The first problem was you had to be dressed correctly or it was very uncomfortable and secondly the wind kept you off a lot of the main river areas that I have been fishing. Early in the week we had some good fish over 5 lbs. and if you wanted to fish the schooling fish you could walk away with catches over 50 or more fish, and mixed in there were many white bass, spots, stripers and even some cat fish! We caught these schooling fish on jigging spoons and a few on top water baits. The traditional bites came on mainly top water baits over grass, a few on crank baits and our biggest fish came rat fishing! The crank bait bite showed signs of coming on strong in certain areas, but then died with the change in weather. Hopefully this weather change will be what we need to turn on the fall bite and maybe we will get a few weeks of some strong traditional fall fishing. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 10/11/09 To sum up this past week we were fishing for a few bites all week long. Everyday seemed to be a challenge! We caught fish, had some good fish in the 6 ½ lb. range but the number of bites are still down; and when you did find a few fish you had a short window as far as time to get to them. If you had 45 minutes when they finally turned on that was a lot. We did have one day where we had only about 8 bites but they were good fish and ended the day with about 22 lbs. for the best five! This past weekend BFL there were over 100 fisherman that did not weigh in a measuring fish and 50 more that just had one! Tough it was and tough it is! Most of my fish this week came on crank-baits in the mid part of the day, a few top water bites early where you only had maybe the first hour of the morning and in-between you struggled. Not pretty but it is what it is! I’ll be back at it all week this up-coming week, I’m going to do what I do and hope the bite gets better. We have got to get into a normal fall pattern at some point and hopefully sooner rather than later, and when we do the fishing should be great.
