Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/24/10 The lake continues to produce great days for me and my customers over this past week, I have continued to have catches daily of over 50 bass per day, with 20 lb best 5 stringers easily achieved. Fishing has been easy, skill level has not been an issue, and you can catch bass and plenty of them. I spent the week from Brown’s Creek to BB Comer Bridge, the technique everyday changed slightly but the result was the same. A few days the bass wanted a real slow presentation where you had to fish a dead stick technique like a sinko or let your worm just sit on the bottom. Other days they were ripping a rattle bait or Punisher Spinner Bait out of your hand. We are starting to see some grass growth in different areas of the lake and hopefully this will ensure the good fishing into the summer months. I believe the shad spawn should start showing up on the ledges over the next few days, and as the B.A.S.S. Elite arrive over this next week they should find the lake in a strong post spawn pattern. Fishing is great; we are seeing a slight reduction of people on the water as spring breaks are ending through the area and there are more good times ahead! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/18/10 The lake has once again produced some great days over the past week, the bigger fish are starting to show back up after the spawn, and the numbers keep producing. It been just an amazing run over the last month, when the weather broke it has been nothing but up-hill and we saw more of the same this past week. My highlights this past week saw one short afternoon of fishing produce 33 lbs. in my best 5 and that same morning with different fisherman have nearly 30 lbs. in the morning trip. That day we had two fish in the 8 lb range and two in the 7 lb range, plus a bunch of 4 and 5 pounders. Just and amazing day for such a short time period of time on the lake during each outing, on the same day. Coupled with the great fish that day I was on 2 very opposite ends of the lake being up river in the morning and on the lower part that afternoon. Baits this week have been very similar to other weeks fishing Tight-Line Jigs, Go-2-Baits big worms, Punisher Spinner Baits and some SWL buzz baits. I wish I could say this great fishing will continue but I must say it has to slow some as the heat from the summer months start to take over. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/11/10 If you couldn’t catch a fish this past week, you were either not on the water or it’s time to find a different hobby, because fishing was easy! Outside of a little down time on a daily basis from some cold winds it was definitely and easy week to catch bass. The bigger fish didn’t come so easy but bites and smaller fish did. My clients caught anywhere from 30 to 75 fish a day and it was a blast! There are definitely more good times to come as the year is young and there are many patterns to follow that will add to the great times. The year however is different than past years, the stages and patterns are all messed up from past years, we really haven’t had that great top water bite yet and the bass are in mixed stages of the spawn, as there is many different stages that we are experiencing. Some bass are know where nearing lying out and others all past the spawn. We just about exclusively caught fish on soft plastics, Go-2-Baits shaky worm’s big worms and Lil Thumpers were producing all week for me. Just about any dark color worked very well. As we head towards May the best is yet to come but very near! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/3/10 This was probably the best week for numbers so far this year. Some days 50 or more bass was not out of the question. As long as you were fishing for bites and not size it was a lot of fun and a lot of action. We had some consistent weather, the kind April ought to bring and the bass responded by playing all week long. We caught fish this past week on a variety of bates, and I’m not sure anything you fished wouldn’t have caught bass. We used rattle baits some, fished Go-2-Baits big worms and Lil Thumpers, we caught them on Tight-Line Jigs ¼ oz. in crawfish red and black & blue & teal. We fished Texas rigged style and Carolina Rig style. They reacted to it all and made for some great fun. Another great week and some great times on Guntersville it just doesn’t get any better than this. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 2/6/10 This past week on the water was feast for some and struggle for others, the cold nights we had, made for some “right place, right time” fishing. If you were able to be where they were feeding using the right bait they were active. If not there were some long days with a lot of casting a winding but few bites. As always those that met the criteria, found some big fish as there was one bass over 11 lbs. and one over 10 lbs. caught by the fortunate few. I fished all parts of the river this past week from lower end to BB Comer Bridge and had some fair days, but also struggled some. The fish we did catch were average in size at best, and as the week some days were better than others. I am getting busy and the hope for some better weather days ahead could certainly make for some better days on the water. I still have a few days available in February and several in March if you would like to get on Guntersville and try your skills, come fish with me; let’s work together and put some of those big lunkers in the boat. It’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time!
