Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 12/3/11 Although cold in the mornings fishing on Guntersville has been extremely active all week, the bass are still doing some fall chasing of bait and the activity is really good. The water temperatures are still in the low 50’s and there is still big bait balls all through the lake. The bass are extremely fat from the feeding they look like footballs and catching has been really good with good numbers every day. The key has been just finding bait being moved by the bass, when you see bait activity fishing has been good all thru the lake. We fished many different bait’s this week; from Punisher Spinner Baits, jerk baits, Punisher Shaky heads and worms and caught fish on all of them. The bass were not very picky as they seemed to hit just about anything we fished. It seem though that if we had some wind the bass were more active, so that made the coldest part of the day the best fishing as the wind seemed to blow in the early mornings. Fishing is good, pick a day and come fish with me, I have days and guides available to fish with you. I am now selling Christmas gift certificates; they make a great gift for the fisherman who is hard to buy for! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/20/11 The fishing is was again at its best on Guntersville this past week, we are experiencing some great daily catches and the bass are as active as they have been all year and certainly all fall. Numbers are up, size is good and the bass are schooling all over the lake as they should in the fall. The bad news is if you’re going fishing don’t delay and wait too long as we are nearing the end of the fall bite and the bass will shut down just all of a sudden as if someone turned off a water facet. We are still catching fish on top water, with several different types of baits from traditional frogs to Zara Spooks and all in-between. As has been the case since the FLW was here the Alabama rig is for sure catching fish. Winter is close the bigger fish will move out and bites will slow down as we move forward. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 11/5/11 The good times continue on the lake this past week, folks are catching fish, and they are having fun most days on the water. I wouldn’t say fishing is as good as past years by anyone’s imagination but it is better than it has been this fall so far. The cooler temperatures are allowing for some good catches and bigger fish but the day is work and there is certainly down time during the day! This past week we spent most of the time on the water fishing a variety of top water baits and then on the sunny high pressure time of day we went to crank baits and Punisher spinner baits off the grass edges and the back side of the ledges. Most of my customers this week averaged somewhere between 15 and 25 fish a day and a few good size ones in there with them. There is still plenty of fall fishing left for the year as the water temperatures are still in the mid to high 60’s and unless we get some extreme cold the lake will cool gradually and fall fishing should continue for the next several weeks. The grass on the lake is still strong and the top water bite should remain strong until we see the grass rot off the ledges and points throughout the lake! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 10/22/11 The cooler nights and wind made for some great improvement in the fishing this past week on Guntersville! The bass were definitely more active, the wind pushed the bait around creating more top water activity and the bigger fish moved up into the more typical fall spots. It truly was the best week we have had in over two months. The best news was we had a lot of top water activity and my customers had some great fun as the bigger fish were slamming the El Grande frog buzzing over the open grass. It was a test of patience when they got those big time strikes to hold there for a couple of seconds to insure a good hook set! People come down to Guntersville from all over to experience the top water bite in the fall and this past week did not disappoint them. Fishing is getting better, there is once again a variety of patterns you can catch fish on and we are catching 20 plus fish in and eight hour day and missing just as many! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 10/8/11 This past week on Guntersville might very well be the worst fishing I have seen on the 38 years I have fished this lake! Even on the bad years or times on the water you could find a small fish bite and still catch several fish but this is just shameful! You’re lucky to catch 5 fish in an 8 hour day and that is a good day. My customers are fishing hard long days and the bites are scarce, we are working from 10 ft. of water to 2 ft of water! Fishing on top of the grass with frogs, and on the bottom with worms and lizards; fishing fast moving baits and slow ones, the fishing is just not happening! The water temperature is in the mid 70’s by mid day and high 60’s at first light; certainly cool enough to move the fish into a fall pattern. The bottom line is unless something changes be prepared for long days and just a few opportunities; don’t miss the few bites you get as you will not get a second chance!
