Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/17/10

Although I did not personally get on the water this past week, I did get an opportunity to talk to some of my trusted friends that did fish. Let me start out by saying the surface temperature in the backwaters was just above freezing 33 to 35 degrees. Over my many years of fishing Guntersville I have might as well been home instead of fishing at that type of water temperature.  My fish over this type of cold water have never responded for me unless the water temperature was 38 degrees and above.

So with the fore mentioned water temperatures the fishing was very tough on Guntersville. As the week moved on and we started to see some warming temperature, I have been busy working the boat show for Stratos and Dawson Boats.  My trusted buddies found some fish feeding on top in shallow water on Friday or Saturday and caught them on fast moving baits.

I’ll be back on the water most of next week, and should have some first hand information. I have days open now and on through the spring. Come fish with me I’d love to get out with you on Guntersville and find a big hog to call your personal best.

Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 1/9/10 I only braved the cold one-day this past week; we have been into some of the coldest and nastiest days of the past 10 years and getting to a ramp was a challenge in itself. The one day I did get on the water I was pleasantly surprised, the fish were feeding in the mid part of the day, and I managed to put about 11 good fish in the boat. I fished only for about 4 hours and my day went something like this. I spent the first hour looking for fish off the river channel when that didn’t produce I moved to the back side of the channel for about 30 minutes, I only caught one fish; then as the sun warmed a little I headed to the mouths of the creeks around the edges of the grass and caught the rest of my fish in less than 5 feet of water. The bass were up feeding in shallow water around humps and points and in about 2 hours fishing a Mister Twister Comida I put 10 more bass in the boat with the biggest being around 5 pounds. The one fish I caught off the backside of the channel came on fishing jerk baits by moving it very slowly over the first break from 4 to 7 feet. The year is young and the big fish will feed a lot over the next 2 months getting ready for the spawn, and there will be some great times on the water. I have days available, come fish with me let’s find some of these big January bass together! Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 12/19/09 Well here we are in mid to late December and the bass fishing, despite the cold remains pretty good! The bites are hit and miss but the results at the end of the day remain good. This past week I fished 2 times with fairly good results both days. The patterns were completely different but the results were the same, we caught several fish in a short period of time on the water. The first day we found some bass chasing shad in 46- degree water, we started chucking top water baits at them and ended the day with 17 fish all caught on top. The second day we found fish around grass edges in 5 to 9 feet of water catching them on small Punisher Shaky heads and on small crank baits. Both days were short 4-hour days, had a lot of fun found some decent bass. We will soon be on the upper end of the shortest day of the year; that means the days will start to get longer by about a-minute-and-a-half every day. When this occurs it just takes a few sunny days to start the run into the pre-spawn and I expect it to be another great pre-spawn fishing this year. I am trying to get my new 2010 Stratos ordered so I have my 2009 Stratos Evolution for sale please call if your interested its loaded and beautifully colored. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 12/13/09 As is generally the case around the holidays my fishing time on the water is down and the weather seems to keep changing the patterns with its constant change. My time on the water although limited did produce some good numbers on the one nice weather day we had this past week. I fished the area around Goosepond and found fish on just about every stop. One pattern that I always try in the cold days is fishing a jerk bait, in fact as many of my readers may recall the best day I have ever been part of came in the cold of an early day in February in 2003; fishing jerk baits with a very close friend of mine. Where we landed so many big fish over 5 pounds; that it was a day I have just never forgot. So my one-day on the water we pulled out jerk baits and had some good times this past week. What we were doing was looking for bait activity off the edges of the grass and throwing jerk baits into the baitfish. Every stop it produced bites, as we ended the day with nearly 40 bass, had lots of fun and enjoyed a great day on the water. The baitfish activity is over 10 to 15 feet of water around points and ledges, we would either look for the seagulls swarming or notice top activity head to that area and have a blast. I have only a few Christmas gift certificates left for this year, they are going fast and if you would like to buy one for a Christmas gift time is running out so you need to do so quickly. Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 12/5/09 This past week on the water was all about small baits, average size fish and 10-foot water. Nothing to brag about except catching numbers; averaging 25 to 40 fish a day on small baits. It was really surprising but once I got off the grass and starting fishing points, bank cover like stumps or lay downs we had some really good times on the water. I fished mainly Punisher 1/8 oz. shaky head lures, using small Mister Twister worms and or pitching ¼ oz. Tight- Line jigs at cover, points and trees. Colors were mainly dark like black & blue jigs and June bug colored worms. We also threw Secret Weapon Lure Small Assassinator short arm spinner baits white in color around the cover. I was only on the water a couple of days but I had some great fun and enjoyed some early winter fishing. It won’t be long before the bigger fish will be feeding in the warmest part of the day and the chance of finding a trophy bass gets greater. I am selling Christmas gift certificates, I only sell a limited number; they make an excellent present for the avid fisherman.
