The Advantage of Flat Sided Crank Baits

As the winter roles on into spring the need to do some tackle assessment becomes most important. You just can’t head to the water without some thought of what baits your going to use and why. The thing I believe is that as the pre-spawn grows closer there are some baits that offer advantages from what one would consider similar fishing in the fall. An example of this is crank baits; the fall fishing to me in the use of crank baits is completely different than it would be in the pre spawn. In the fall crank baits matching the size of the baitfish is very important, but in the pre-spawn size may not matter. Action to me is more of the key than anything during the pre-spawn. This is where flat-sided crank baits add catching power and weapons to your fishing lures. You see, flat-sided crank baits have more action over a short distance than rounded crank baits. The rounded bait digs deeper and takes longer to get into the action, therefore you must make long casts to make the lure work correctly. Where the flat-sided crank baits make and immediate movement upon entering the water, generally displace water more rapidly and cause more action, which is needed during the spring spawn.
You can be more precise and make casts to particular areas and get the action needed immediately to catch fish. There are also many different types of flat sided crank baits, rattle bait are just one of them.
Lastly flat-sided crank baits are less likely to be affected by the current, and in the spring when we generally have more rain this is very important. Current pushing round crank baits can make it very hard to work. The current pushes it sideways and eliminates the action. Flat side crank baits are less likely to be effected by current, and because they immediately make action they are a better fish catcher in current.
