Bass Times/Feb. 2007 Issue/Volume 37 No. 2
"I made the spinnerbait that I always wanted to throw."
That's the way that Stephen Headrick, owner of Punisher Lures is Celina, Tenn., descibes the newest addition to his line of products that also includes jigs, craft hair, Fish Dope and Float/Fly Rods.
The large, flat head on his new spinnerbait featuring red eyes is perhaps the most important of several unique features on The Flame.
"Eighty percent of feeding is done by sight," said Headrick, also known as the "Smallmouth Guru" for his prowess on Dale Hollow Lake. Â "A larger profile will help with that, especially in stained water."
"But I do not have larger blades," he added. Â "I want blades for flash, but I don't want the fish hitting the blades."
He has also incorporated a larger diameter wire than what many manufacturers use.
"Everybody talks anout thin wire to help you feel the vibration," Headrick said. Â "Well, fish don't need that vibration. Â And, besides, if the bait is balanced, you'll get vibration."
The Flame is well-balanced, too, so it runs true whether you're slow rolling or burning it. Â A slightly longer arm helps with that balance, placing the blades just behind the head.
The bait also features a fuller than normal skirt with scale patterns and five strands of red.
"Just like the head, this skirt provides a bigger target for the bass," said Headrick.
Equipped with a razor-sharp Mustad hook, The Flame is available in double willow and tandem, with sizes including 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ounce. Â The bait retails for about $4.99.
