Some November Tactics that Catch Fish Before the month ends I thought I would spend a little time describing some of the various successful tactics that catch bass in November and early December. The key to this period is to remember that the bass are feeding in the extreme shallow water. When you combine shallow water techniques with grass you start to limit the type of fishing presentations that will work effectively in the remaining grass. The first presentation to me is to find grass that has reseeded down from the top of the water 6 to 10 inches; this allows you to pull small short arm spinner baits over the grass. The good thing about short arm spinner baits is the pure fact that the blades do not gather the grass up on the blades nearly as much as a long arm spinner bait do. The flash added with slight deflection off of the grass causes strikes and some really good fish can be caught this way! Next is to find the fish in the middle part of the sunny type days we have in November. This time of day generally moves the bass a little deeper away from the sunlight and it is an ideal time to work rattle baits in 6 to 10 feet of water over short grass. You probably can’t fish anything heavier than ½ oz. but that is all you need to hook up with some good fish. As in the spring that yo-yoing motion will get the strikes so drop it and stop it, just a little quicker so you’re not hanging the grass. A good way not to hang the grass is to use a non stretch line as it will pull through the grass and keep moving. Lastly if you’re a jig fisherman, lay downs, boat houses and rip-rap are just loaded with shallow bass feeding before the winter pushes in. Pitch that jig in and around cover, work the corners and pylons around the boat houses very methodically and you can find a big stringer of fish. Some Keys to Hump Fishing PDF Print E-mail
Written by Captain Mike Gerry

Some Keys to Hump Fishing As the water warms, the humps start to turn on and every year I try to teach my customers some ways to be effective fishing the humps. The first trick is to find them, easily accomplished, put your GPS map on your computer, they will show up on a big screen very easy. Mark them and load them on your GPS. Next, find the humps with grass on the first drops off the humps. That first 3 to 6 foot of drop if it has grass on it you can bet the bass will be on or near that hump somewhere, look for bait fish they are sometimes a big key to hump fishing. Work the hump with different types of baits and different presentations. Try something like spinner baits pulling from the top of the hump to the deeper water. Change the presentation; drop it stop it and slowly retrieve it over the hump. Change to a slower pace presentation, like a big worm or lizard or comida dropping it and swimming it as you retrieve it back to the boat. Work it slow then work it faster. Try to get a feel for the speed the bass want as you fish the hump. Sometimes in early summer speed of the bait can really mean the difference in catching fish. I have found that some days they want it just sitting on the bottom and others they want a fairly quick swim type retrieve. Lastly change boat position, the subtle difference of where the boat is can be the biggest factor. The boat needs to be positioned in several different ways, work it out off the 8 to 10 foot water throwing up the hump. Then position it on the corners, as they have a tendency to form points around the humps; and if that doesn’t work position the boat on top of the hump and throw to the deep pulling up the hump. One these will work and put fish in the boat, you just have to try different positions to find the way the bass are positioned. These keys can make you a very effective fisherman around humps! Some Important Spring Time Skills PDF Print E-mail
Written by Captain Mike Gerry

Some Important Spring Time Skills No matter what time of year you’re targeting largemouth bass; lure placement and good casting skills are a big part of catching fish. In the spring you could be targeting spawning beds, as we are today, or maybe the top water bite, as it requires precise targeting of cover or wood or points. You must be able to place your bait so you can hit the most productive area that your fishing, place it where it will be most effective. Long casts are also a must when fishing in the spring, as the water warms in the springtime on the top rather than the bottom the fish will position next to the warming top of the water. Therefore a long cast keeps your bait near the top for a longer period of time and hence in the strike zone longer. Lure speed plays an important role in good effective casting and retrieving techniques. In cold water when the fish are lethargic a slow retrieve is imperative, when the fish are bedding a slow moving bait, that you can shake and twitch plays a big part in catching a good fish. Lastly making contact with the bottom or grass or wood is extremely important in getting a bite. A lure that ticks the structure will deflect and move and become a target for the feeding bass. If your going to catch bass in the spring you must be effective enough with many skills from casting to lure placement to produce bass the way you want to. I talk to many people weekly about the skills involved in bass fishing; the first thing they tell me is that they didn’t realize bass fishing was that technical. It's Time to Get to the Wood PDF Print E-mail
Written by Captain Mike Gerry

It’s Time to Get to the Wood I can’t remember when I have seen the bass holding to the wood the way they have been this year. I suspect the lack of grass from the extreme cold weather has the bass doing some things they normally haven’t had to do to find cover. It sort of reminds me of the late 80’s when the grass was killed out of the lake. The good news is if you can find wood you can find bass! There are certainly a variety of ways to fish wood, you can of course fish the traditional stump fields; my best presentation has been on Tight-Line jigs. I have also had some success using Mister Twister lizards and big worms in the stump fields. There are also many other ways to fish wood on Guntersville, boathouses can certainly hold good fish, I personally don’t fish it much but I would bet the fish are holding on and near the boathouses. The second most successful pattern for me has been lay downs and rip rap on the edges of the deeper banks. We have caught several good size bass on rip-rap and just about every hit has been fierce. My best lure for this has been Tight-Line Jigs in crawfish color, the lay downs have just been super for my clients. We have caught most of our big fish off the edges and most of the numbers several times this spring so far. The key to this is deep water some where near, the bass seem to move up and down several times a day if there is some depth near by. You can go through a bunch of lay downs several times and catch fish every time with their constant movement. Lastly look for stick-ups or wood lying in the water if it is stuck to the bottom there is a fish on it and I believe you could catch it. Several trips so far this spring have resulted in good catches around such cover. Be patient work it slow and you will find the bass on that cover. For those who have been inquiring yes my house was totally destroyed in the tornado that hit waterfront cove, the best way to help is for those who have been asking is just fish with me so I have an income! Fishing Report Lake Guntersville 4/11/09 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Captain Mike Gerry

Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 4/11/09 From post spawn fish to cold nightly temperatures in the 30’s and tornado treats made for an up and down week on the water. We are in pattern of constant weather change like I haven’t seen in the past several years this has made the fishing different every day. Through it all we have had some good times this past week and struggled a few days also. The good days produced catches of 20 to 30 bass and the slow days were 10 or so with some big fish just about every day regardless of numbers. The thing that has been odd is that it appeared that the fish wanted a different presentation every day. One day we caught them many on Mister Twister big worms and lizards another day on Tight-Line Jigs. We even had a day they were hitting a hollow bodied rat, so things were different every day but successful in most cases except for one day. The grass appears to be a little behind but the fishing should be good for the most part, as we get further into April and May. Someday we will get some consistent warm weather and when we do there will be a drastic change for the better. I have openings all through the month and into May please call and set up your day on the water. For those who have been inquiring yes my house was totally destroyed in the tornado that hit waterfront cove, the best way to help is for those who have been asking is just fish with me so I have an income! My Position on the Spraying in Roseberry Creek PDF Print E-mail
Written by Captain Mike Gerry
Thursday, 02 April 2009 18:40
My Position on the Roseberry Creek Spraying Issue Over my past articles on this subject I have tried to state a couple of things on the issue of spraying on Lake Guntersville. First, I find it hard to believe that this state has no laws limiting the ability for a property owner or a group of property owners from hiring or spraying around or near the lake anything they want to kill the grass. There should be laws and restrictions that no one can spray the lake with out over-site from several governing state agencies, proper permits and approvals. This lake belongs to the people and the people represent several different groups from fisherman to boaters and more. Second that TVA has tried to back out of the managing body of Lake Guntersville over money. TVA is responsible for the lake; they should manage it with vigilance and provide a proper grass-spraying program that meets the needs of the fisherman as well as the boaters. They should protect the natural environment, and never let a rogue group of individuals kill the grass because they are not able to do what they want in a creek. Completely killing out a creek is like a tornado destroying a housing development, there is no place for people to come home to and the bass are no different. If man completely kills out Roseberry creek the bass will leave there and we will lose the best spawning ground on the river. If people that live around a natural forest decided that in order to use the forest they wanted to cut down an acre of trees they would go to jail; yet we are accepting that they can kill the grass. Wrong extremely wrong and should never be allowed! Lastly for the city of Scottsboro to be giving money to a rogue group of property owners that can’t use the lake the way they want to, is also wrong. Scottsboro city should be doing things to improve the lake for all; killing out a creek only benefits some property owners for their personal needs, not all of us who use the lake! The lake should be managed for boat-ways and use around boat houses, if the city wants to give money then let them pay for a proper managing program, not the elimination of the grass in Roseberry Creek for the benefit of a few.
